Why We Prepare Your BAS But Do Not Lodge It

Lodging a business activity statement on a client’s behalf is BAS agent work, regulated by the Tax Practitioners Board. We are not registered BAS agents, so we do not do it, and we would rather tell you that on this page than after you had signed.

What we do is everything that happens before lodgement, which is where nearly all of the work and nearly all of the risk actually sits. Your registered BAS or tax agent then lodges from books that are already right, which usually takes them very little time and costs you correspondingly little.

If you do not currently have a registered agent, we will say so plainly and point you towards finding one. Most of our clients already have an accountant who does this as a matter of course.

Worth knowing. You can always lodge your own BAS yourself. A business owner does not need to be registered to lodge for their own entity. Registration is only required to lodge on someone else’s behalf. So the practical choice is between lodging it yourself from books we have prepared, or having your agent do it.

01

GST coded, not guessed

Every transaction given the correct treatment. The recurring problem areas of insurance, government charges, bank fees, overseas subscriptions and second-hand purchases handled the way they should be rather than defaulted.

02

The whole quarter reconciled

All three months closed and locked before the BAS is prepared, so the figures are not amended two weeks after lodgement.

03

Control accounts checked

GST collected, GST paid, PAYG withheld and any instalment amounts agreed to the ledger, so what is reported is what the accounts actually say.

04

A working paper your agent can use

A summary showing each BAS field, where the figure came from, and a note on anything unusual in the quarter. They review rather than reconstruct.

05

The liability visible all quarter

Your monthly pack shows the GST and PAYG accumulating, so the amount due is never a surprise on the 28th.

The Difference

Two Ways a Quarter Can Go

Three months of nothing, then a week of panic
  • Coding done in one rushed sitting near the deadline
  • Anything unclear coded to whatever seems closest
  • The amount owing is discovered, not anticipated
  • The GST was in the account and got spent on stock
  • Agent bills for clean-up before they can lodge
  • A payment plan, and interest, and a bad fortnight
A quarter that closes itself
  • Coded weekly, so the quarter is finished when it ends
  • Ambiguous items resolved on the monthly query list
  • You have watched the liability build for three months
  • GST shown separately on every pack as money not yours
  • Agent receives a working paper and lodges in minutes
  • The payment is made from money already set aside
BAS FAQs

Before You Ask

Either your registered BAS or tax agent, or you. Most clients use their accountant, who is already a registered tax agent and lodges as part of the relationship. If you prefer to lodge yourself through the ATO’s online services, you can. We give you the prepared figures and the working paper, and you enter them. What we cannot do is press the button on your behalf.

You see it building every month, and we send an indicative figure as soon as the final month of the quarter is closed, which is well before the lodgement date. The whole design of this is that the number arrives while you still have time to do something about it.

Then you have no BAS to prepare, which makes life simpler. It becomes relevant as you approach the registration turnover threshold, and that is worth watching rather than discovering. Our monthly reporting makes the trend obvious, and we will raise it with you and suggest you confirm the timing with your accountant well before it is urgent.

Yes, and it saves you being a messenger. With your authority we correspond with them directly, ask how they want the file structured, and send the quarterly working paper straight across. You stay copied in so nothing happens without your knowledge.
