MYOB Bookkeeping, Including the Old Files

MYOB Business and AccountRight, day-to-day bookkeeping and payroll. Plenty of good businesses are on MYOB for a good reason and are quietly told they should switch. We are not going to tell you that unless it is true.

Why Businesses Stay

MYOB Earns Its Keep on Payroll

The industry conversation has moved on from MYOB in a way that is not entirely fair. For businesses with complicated award and entitlement setups, it handles natively what other platforms need a bolt-on app to manage.

There is also the depth of history. A business with fifteen years in an AccountRight file has something genuinely valuable, and the cost of a migration is not only the project fee. It is the comparatives, the audit trail and the muscle memory of whoever uses it daily.

We work in MYOB properly rather than treating it as a legacy problem to be escaped. If you are better off staying, that is what we will tell you.

The one exception. If you are still on an old desktop MYOB file with no cloud access, that is worth moving, not necessarily to a different brand, but at least to a version where bank feeds, STP and remote access work. Desktop-only bookkeeping now costs more in manual effort than the upgrade does.

01

Award and entitlement handling

Complex pay conditions, leave accruals and entitlement setups managed natively rather than through a third-party app and an integration to reconcile.

02

Depth in AccountRight

Job tracking, inventory and multi-currency capability that rewards knowing the software. Businesses that have grown into it rarely find a lighter tool an upgrade.

03

Years of history in one place

Comparatives back further than most cloud files exist, which matters for trend reporting, finance applications and any due diligence.

04

An accountant who prefers it

Some practices are set up around MYOB and work faster in it. Moving you to their second-best platform helps nobody.

05

A team that already knows it

The retraining cost of a migration is real and almost always understated in the business case someone shows you.

What We Do in MYOB

Setup, Clean-Up and the Monthly Work

Account list restructured

The MYOB account list rebuilt around your industry with sensible header and detail accounts, so the reports group things usefully instead of alphabetically by accident.

Bank feeds and rules

Feeds connected for every account and card, with rules set up for recurring transactions so routine coding stops being manual.

Payroll categories audited

Wage, deduction, entitlement and superannuation categories checked for correct ATO reporting and correct super treatment, which is the most common source of quiet historical errors in MYOB files.

Jobs and categories

Job tracking or categories configured where you need per-job, per-site or per-department reporting, and reported on monthly rather than just recorded.

Old file brought current

Desktop or superseded files reviewed, upgraded to a supported version where appropriate, and reconciled from a defined starting point.

Monthly close and pack

Reconciled by the 10th with the same two-page pack every other client gets. The platform changes; the standard does not.

MYOB FAQs

Before You Ask

Only for a specific reason. Good reasons: you need an app that only connects to Xero, or you are on a desktop file with no cloud access. Poor reasons: someone said MYOB is old-fashioned, or your new bookkeeper only knows one platform. We work in both, so we have nothing to gain from moving you, and we will give you the arithmetic either way.

Broadly three: upgrade within MYOB to a current cloud-capable version and keep your history, move to another platform with two years of history brought across, or stay where you are and keep doing bank reconciliation manually. We will cost the first two honestly. The third is rarely the cheapest once you price the hours it consumes.

Yes, and it is common. We reconcile to a defined handover date so responsibility for each period is unambiguous, and we check the payroll year-to-date figures carefully because that is where a mid-year handover can go wrong if nobody looks. You will get a short written summary of what state we found the file in.
